Six years on

Today marks the anniversary of the death of my mother Dr. Elsa Vassallo m.d. born in Zabbar in 1934 died in Sliema in 2018.

An appreciation of a wonderful person whose meticulate nature and hard working discipline and love for religion depicted the true nurture of private church schooling and catholic family upbringing in Malta. She fostered in us a mindfulness that we ourselves treasure of true Christian upbringing ,prayer and charity work. 

A caring mother of nine children, relentlessly patient and responsible. A female doctor helping run a pre natal and well women’s clinic in the Middle East at a time where news of the problems in the Gaza Strip hit the news stories daily in the eighties. Praying hard in hope that a jihad would not be called and the situation escalate to reach Jeddah which was situated close to the holy city of Mecca in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

She put us through catholic school in Malta, international school in the Middle East Asia and exclusive catholic sixth form boarding school in the UK as well as helped us graduate from university or chosen disciplines of study and encouraged us in our careers and family lives. 

She outlived my father (also a doctor) by twenty four years.

May she continue to be remembered fondly by all who knew and lived her. May she rest in peace. Amen.
